INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET AND ISSUES IN MEDIA TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2

Task:         Co-operative learning group activities

  • Creating classroom rules

  • Definitions and examples of google search, advance search, bookmarking, netiquete, internet vs. world wide web, digital native vs. digital immigrants, asynchronous vs. synchronous communication, creative ommons, open educational resources and fair use, viruses, malware and antivirus

Each group had to create five (5) classroom rules.  We first identified the decisions to be made and then analyzed the issue under discussion.  A criteria was established and we begun brainstorming potential rules.  We evaluated our options and selected the best ones.  The rules were then written on manilla paper to be presented to the class.

Our second assigment as a group was to find the definitions of google searh, advance search and bookmarking.  We used google tosearch for definitions and came up with a plan of action on how to explain examples in presentation to class.

According to wikipedia, google search is commonly referred to as google web search or simply, google is a web search engine developed by google.  In ither words, google search is a search engine used to locate information about something on the world wide web.

Advanced search is a full search of the entire dictionar text.  Advanced search options are a set of very useful features offered by most search engines and search tools on the web.  It also allows users to specify additional requirements for a search eg. language, region, site oe domain. In the context of the World Wide Web, a bookmark is a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that is stored for later retrieval in any of various storage formats. All modern web browsers include bookmark features. Bookmarks are called favorites or Internet shortcuts in Internet Explorer, and by virtue of that browser's large market share, these terms have been synonymous with bookmark since the first browser war.[1] Bookmarks are normally accessed through a menu in the user's web browser, and folders are commonly used for organization. In addition to bookmarking methods within most browsers, many external applications offer bookmark management. (Wikipedia)

I found it challenging coming up with straight to the point positive classroom rules but with our group discussion and the sharing of ideas, I was able to contribute and share my ideas.

Public speaking is a little intimidating to me but I am working on it by my participation in the role plays and presentation that I have been doing.

I learnt that by creating positive classroom rules it can be easily remembered and practiced by students.  I also learnt that advance search allows me to get more accurate information using specific words.  Classroom rules is a means of creating respect for the teacher, student and the classroom. Creating such rules in my craft room will create a better learning environment for my students.

Netiquette is a complicated word but it is very important to be polite and professional when sending emails but this is mainly taught in computer class.  I will, however, teach my students how to save time researching by using advance search.
